Synopsis of Double Date

Written by Trish

Lane is talking to Rory as they walk en route to their schools (and bus stops), and she is trying to convince Rory to get Dean to set her and this guy Todd up, whom Dean hangs with. Rory quizzes Lane about the situation and tries to get out of setting them up. In the end she agrees to ask Dean about it, and see if they can double date.

At the Inn, Lorelai is over whelmed with work and accidentally overbooks the rooms. Michel is very displeased with this. In the kitchen, Jackson (produce man) and Sookie are having an awkward moment, since she asked him to go out sometime. Lorelai who walks in seeing this moment, she tells Sookie to ask him out for a specific date, and they banter back and forth on whether or not she should. Sookie, having memorized his cell #, calls him and asks him out.

After school, Rory is with Dean, and is trying to figure out how to ask him to help her set up Lane and Todd. Dean, being a guy, is trying to smooch with Rory and she manages to bring up the topic of setting them up. Dean is unsure of whether or not Todd will like Lane, and this offends Rory. Dean eventually gives in and says fine to them getting Lane and Todd to double date with them. He wants to get back to smooching now.

Sookie comes in and tells Lorelai about the date, and to add that she already agreed to have Lorelai go too. This is because Jackson's cousin is in town, and she didn't want to reschedule the date. Lorelai is not very happy about this and refuses to go, but somehow Sookie convinces her to go.

Date night, Lane tells Rory that she lied to her mom, because she is strict and would never have let her go. Rory is not happy, because she never lies to her mom, and if she doesn't then her mom would be forced to talk to Lane's mom. They finally devise a plan that eliminates that they are going on a double date, but that Lane and Rory are meeting Dean at the movies. This hopefully covers their tracks.

Lorelai and Sookie get ready for their "double date" with Jackson and his cousin. Lorelai is trying to give Sookie a few pointers about the evening while they get ready. Finally ready, Jackson and his cousin "Roon" arrive. Roon is a small man who seems every put off by Lorelai's height. He comes across rude because he talks right where she can hear everything they are saying. This starts the evening awkwardly, and the evening gets worse at the restaurant they go to. It is the really nice quiet place, and Lorelai drinks martinis while Sookie talks only to her.

In another part of town, Lane is not having a good time at the movies with Todd. He isn't interested in the same things she is, and he seems to be a pretty spacey person. All he can respond to Lane's comments is "Whatever".

Back at the nice restaurant, Roon gets even ruder, and Sookie ignores Jackson in her nervousness. (you can file this night as night from hell for these women) Lorelai gets them to go to Luke's for burgers. This works for Sookie and Jackson, they relax considerably. Lorelai goes to the counter and talks to Luke, ignoring Roon. They start to play 5-card draw, and then Roon demands that he and Jackson leave, but Jackson refuses and Roon stalks off. Just as Lorelai is about to get a request for a date from Luke, Lane's mom bursts in demanding to know where the girls are. She tells Lorelai that she called their home but there was no answer, and now she finds her at the diner. Lorelai says that the girls went to the movies with Dean, and they head off to go get them.

Lane, Rory, Dean, and Todd are walking down the street after the movie, and Lane is trying to leave when her mother shows up and humiliates them. She drags Lane home, and Lorelai takes Rory home too, and thus forcing Rory to bail on Dean. Lorelai lectures Rory, but then forgives her for saving her from having to lie to Mrs. Kim (Lane's mom). They talk about having to respect Lane's mom's wishes, and how strict or crazy she is.

A few days later Rory sneaks up to Lane's window to chat and finds would that Lane is grounded to the house indefinitely. This upsets Rory, and she takes it to her mom, who in turn goes to the antique shop to talk to Mrs. Kim. A ton of insults are thrown at Lorelai, and she still manages to make some sense and then leaves to avoid further insult. She was trying to let Mrs. Kim see that what she was doing was not as effective, as some things she could do...

Later Lorelai and Rory are at Luke's and Rory gets paged, it is Lane, her mom let her out front and talk on the phone. Rory takes off to so spend time with Lane. Thus leaving Lorelai alone. Luke comes over and pours more coffee. There is a moment where you think he might ask Lorelai out, but he in turn doesn't. Instead he comments about them possibly playing cards again. Lorelai says she would like that.
