Synopsis of A-Tisket, A-Tasket
Written by TK
The town has a picnic basket auction for charity where the women make the baskets and the men bid on the baskets and also win the company of the women who made them.
When Jackson finds out that his apartment lease is up in one month, he goes to Sookie to ask her if he should renew. When Sookie says he should, he's crushed, but she seems oblivious to the fact that he wants to move in with her. When Sookie's basket comes up for auction, Jackson doesn't bid on it and Kirk wins it. Sookie asks Jackson why and he tells her he's upset that she doesn't want to move in with him. She admits that she's thought about it, and they make up and agree they should talk about it more. Jackson goes to Kirk to try to get Sookie's basket back, and Kirk milks him for over five times what he paid for the basket at the auction. Jackson and Sookie enjoy their picnic lunch together and Sookie mentions that they should continue their conversation about moving in together. Jackson says he doesn't think they should move in together anymore... instead they should get married. Sookie joyfully accepts his proposal.
Lorelai finds out that Miss Patty has been showing her picture around to single guys and trying to find her a man. Lorelai is horrified when Miss Patty delivers three "resumes" to her of eligible guys, all of whom seem like huge losers. At the picnic basket auction, Lorelai realizes that Miss Patty's eligible men are bidding on her basket, so she runs to the diner and grabs Luke and begs him to bid on her basket. Luke grumbles, but complies, and wins Lorelai's basket. Luke is disgusted by the Slim Jims and stale Pop-Tarts in Lorelai's basket, so he gets them some food from the diner and they share a nice picnic lunch in the gazebo. Luke asks Lorelai who she wanted to win the basket if Miss Patty hadn't sabotaged her, and she talks about how she always got guys who would help her fix up the house before. She says that she likes the idea, though, of having someone you love or who has a crush on you win your basket and then you share a romantic lunch. Luke tells Lorelai that he hopes she gets that some day.
Lane has a complicated plan where her cousin David is supposed to bid on her basket, then they go off and Henry calls her by pay phone and David goes away and Lane has her first real date with Henry. David wins the basket, but when they go to the pay phone it's broken. In desperation, Lane runs to Lorelai and borrows her cell phone to call Henry. Henry says he didn't know what to do when he couldn't get through on the pay phone so he called Lane's house, and when Lane's mother answered he pretended to try to sell her a subscription to the Wall Street Journal. Lane asks him if he can still come have lunch with her, and he says that he doesn't like this complicated plan and all the lies. He says he's asked someone else to prom because he just assumed Lane couldn't go, and since he can't come pick her up for a real date at her door like a gentleman maybe they just shouldn't bother trying anymore. Lane is crushed and runs home. Her mother greets her yelling about how David was here and said that Lane ran off and some strange boy called for her and pretended he was selling the Wall Street Journal. Lane runs crying up to her room. Later, Mrs. Kim comes upstairs and tries to tell Lane that she makes these strict rules to protect her from getting hurt. Lane tells her mother about Henry, and how perfect he was, and how she screwed everything up by being scared to tell her mother about him. When Mrs. Kim hears about Henry, and how he's Korean and going to be a doctor and goes to church, she wants Lane to get him back somehow.
Dean ends up in a bidding war with Jess for Rory's basket, and when Jess takes it all the way to $90 Dean is steaming, but outbid. Jess wins the basket, but Dean tells Rory not to go eat with him. Rory says it's the rules, and goes off with Jess. A fuming Dean talks to Lorelai who shares his concern about Rory spending time with Jess. Meanwhile, Rory and Jess have a nice lunch (after they give up on the contents of the basket and get some pizza) and bond over their love of books, challenging each other to read things and re-read things. Rory drops a bracelet without noticing and Jess picks it up and keeps it. When Rory comes home, Lorelai tells her that she's worried about her spending time with Jess, but Rory insists that Jess isn't as bad as everyone thinks and is angry that both Dean and her mother don't seem to trust her. At dinner with Emily, Lorelai and Rory are still fuming, and Emily drags out of the two Gilmore girls why they're fighting. Rory storms off and Emily tells Lorelai that she agrees with her that Lorelai should be keeping Rory from hanging out with the wrong sort of boy. Emily goes on and on about how Lorelai is Rory's eyes, ears, and brain, and if she has to, Lorelai should lock Rory up and throw away the key. Lorelai is horrified, and immediately goes to apologize to Rory. When they get home, Lorelai goes upstairs and Rory grabs the phone and goes to her room. Rory calls Jess, who is reading a book and holding Rory's bracelet. They start eagerly talking about books.
